WEEK # 6 !!

Let’s get right to the important stuff…. SNOW! WE NEED IT! Put it on that Christmas list at number 1 folks!

The second item on that Santa list…. SKI POLES! Oh, the sweetness of a nice, lightweight pole, that swings rhythmically to our skis, is so important for fast racing. Give coach CJ a shout if you have any questions about purchasing poles. (our team supply is lower than low this season)

Racing was tops for everyone this past week, and it was great to be back in the groove.

Super results from the V/JV/JH team at Ely, and the Newbie team’s practice race was equally as exciting. All ski results & ski meet line ups / starting times are listed at  & also on this website.

http://stevestiming.org/

Great things are happening on the trails with learning & skiing. Some days begin with constant chaotic doings, but the smiles that walk back in the door after practice- are amazing!

THANK YOU to all of our team’s coaches – John F, Josh P,  Chaz, Jacob, Don, Jack G, Jack J & Austin - that make this happen! As the saying goes… it takes a village. 😊

We’re rolling and staying steady as we head into the holiday season.

Monday, December 17 – practice, Classic

Tuesday, December 18 – practice, Classic

Wednesday, December 19- practice & wax night.

Thursday, December 20 V/JV/JH/ Newbies Ski Meet at Mt. Itasca in Coleraine. Classic. Check the location page on this site for directions. Races begin at 11:00 am. See the “Meet Line Up Page” for race info etc. Racer times will be posted on this page on Wednesday morning.

Friday, December 21THE Practice before Christmas.  SKi in your best Ugly Sweater, T-Shirt swap, Secrete Santas (girls) & Pizza (Fundraiser bonus!) Details to be given out at Monday’s practice.

** Always bring both sets of ski boots (if you have 2 pairs) to practice – everyday **

see ya on the trails & THINK SNOW !!

WEEK # 5 !!

What are we mostly doing out there at Giant’s Ridge?

Skiing, learning, fine-tuning & perfecting everything we know so far. WHY? To be the best we can be for the upcoming race season and beyond.

Us coaches are thrilled to see most of our skiers giving it their best effort, day in & day out at the daily practice - and that is when progress happens!

Missing a day here or there, really affects technique level (learning) and ultimately performance.

Keep showing up guys & gals - and the results will follow!

We’re throwing our first race out there this week, and since it is still early season, we’ll be skiing everyone but our newest skiers, and those that not been able to attend practices on a regular basis. And, because the ski meet is on a school day, all the newbies will stay back, instead of attending and watching. The next opportunity for this group will be skiing and / or racing at the Dec. 20th meet (changed from Dec 19) at Mt. Itasca, in Coleraine.

Moving on to this week’s agenda.

Monday, December 10 – practice. SKATE. SPEEDS.

Tuesday, December 11 – practice. SKATE. DISTANCE / FARTLEKS.

Wednesday, December 12 – practice. Waxing for ski racers, everyone else skis.

Thursday, December 13 – Ski Meet in Ely @ Hidden Valley, 11:00 am start. SKATE. See the “Meet Line Up Page” for race info etc. Racer times will be posted on this page on Wednesday morning.

*NO PRACTICE* on this day for skiers who are not racing.

Friday, December 14 – practice for everyone - skate or classic to be determined.

** Always bring both sets of ski boots (if you have 2 pairs) to practice – everyday **

WEEK # 4

Last week we had Great Practices with Great Weather with Great Grooming and Great Kids with Great Attitudes! We’ll be looking for a repeat this week! 😊

SKATE skis will be our choice of equipment beginning on Monday, as we set aside our classical tools for now. But, the similarities between skate & classic technique, are on point. Both techniques are driven from the same dynamics – body position, motion, timing, power.

What were looking at for Dec. 3 – Dec. 7No ski meet on Saturday Dec. 8th. It looks like our first meet will (hopefully) take place on Dec. 13th.

Monday- Practice

Tuesday – Practice

Wednesday – Practice

Thursday – Practice + PICTURE DAY

Friday – Practice

Other updates:

The COFFEE FUNDRAISER was a HUGE success! Thanks to all who participated and congrats to Ellie for being the lucky raffle winner, while the TEAM PIZZA PARTY is slated for Friday, Dec. 21 at our CHRISTMAS PRACTICE.

SKI BAGS – will be available this week to purchase. ($20.00) Ten were ordered, and four are sold so far.

WAXING   WAXING   WAXING

WEEK # 3 & things are smoothing out and rolling in the right direction!

Everyone has classic ski equipment now and most of the skate equipment is checked out too. Waiting on a few sizes of poles & boots yet, but everyone is skiing and making progress.

Ski technique is our number one game for everyone, from first year skiers to our veteran's.  We're always teaching, learning, tweaking.

The big news, is TRACKS & GROOMING throughout the stadium. Both should be up & ready for our practices this week. Slipping into classical tracks will be exciting for everyone

who hasn't experienced real cross country skiing.

CLEARANCE SLIPS: NO SKIING for those who don't have slips in.

Mesabi East skiers- check with Nikki - to see if you are cleared if you haven't already. Eveleth-Gilbert: only two skiers are cleared. VA- everyone is cleared. MIB- 3 out of 4 are cleared.

COFFEE FUNDRAISER: orders are due to practice on TUESDAY, Nov. 27th

TRAIL PASSES: buy them this week at the latest. Talk to a coach if you need help with this.

TEAM SKI BAGS: we're out, so let's play make a deal. IF you're skier has a team bag now, and would like a brand new DOUBLE SKI BAG, ski bags will be available to buy for $20.00 later this week at practice.

UNIFORMS / TEAM WARM UP JACKETS: will be issued this WEDNESDAY.

BLACK PUFFY JACKETS- orders are due MONDAY, Nov. 26 if you are ordering one.

Looking ahead a bit...

TEAM PICTURE DAY-is THURSDAY, DEC 6th

FIRST SKI MEET - SATURDAY, DEC 7th. TBD.

 LET IT SNOW !!!

Two days of practice = two days of great everything!

We’re rolling earlier than usual for being on snow, and two groups have now gotten out the door on those skinny skis. The third and newest crop, will be putting it together also on snow today. The snow in the woods is "ok" and enough to slush around on. The man made snow in the stadium looks fantastic, but it isn’t pushed nor tilled up yet, but we’re making the best out of what we have. “Patience” is a daily key word. (for everything) 😊

I’m super excited to say we have around 60 kids out for the team right now! Wow! GO GIANT BLUE RANGER BEARS! And with that comes a “good problem” that we are encountering. Equipment is running low for our 1st & 2nd year skiers. I have some feelers out there, to find more classic skis & boots, and hope that will reduce some of our “now” needs. And if our numbers stay like this, we’ll be adding & looking for another coach. Anyone know anyone???

Moms & Dads of our 3rd & 4th year skiers, if at all possible it would be great if your skier could get their own personal classic skis, boots or poles. Any piece of equipment, is helpful, and certainly your skier is ready for it. If you have any questions or need any direction in this area, please let me know. I went to the Ski Hut last week with several skiers & parents, and can certainly line something like this up again, or give you verbal advice on how / what to purchase.

Team ski bags are running low, so we’re asking for parents to look into buying a ski bag. The bags need to be at least 210 cm in length. Mesabi Rec in Virginia carries bags for a local buy. These are a top necessity for skiers to store their skis & poles in the Chalet.

Giant’s Ridge Trail Passes will be needed after Thanksgiving when GR is officially open. Here is the link for information on fees. https://giantsridge.ltibooking.com/purchase-path/product-details/9093

Skiwear orders are out there. The red personalized jackets are at this link: http://borahteamwear.tuosystems.com/stores/mevaeg . The last day to order the jacket, hat or buff is Sunday, Nov. 18th. The online storefront closes on this day. Turn around time is about 4 weeks to receive the items. The black puffy jacket orders are due on Monday, Nov. 26th. Order forms are at practice and also on the team website to download & print. Both styles of jackets are available to try on for sizing at practice too.

The Coffee Fundraiser is on! Check with your skier, as packets were handed out at Tuesday’s practice. Got questions on this? Email August Galloway: agalloway@isd2711.org. (thanks August!)

Wednesday practices are back to the original schedule of 4-6 pm. (bus driver issues at VA school) If your skier needs to leave early for church night, just let a coach know.

Whew! This is exciting stuff all around, and whatever happens, we'll make it work!

THANK YOU to all of you parents for encouraging & supporting your skier & our team!

It’s gonna be a fantaski season!

LET IT SNOW!!
